AI in ecommerce for online stores and marketplace sellers
AI in ecommerce, as we build it, works on the systems you already sell through: your Shopify, WooCommerce or BigCommerce store, Amazon, eBay and an order hub such as Linnworks or Veeqo. Our ecommerce software development joins them, so a product is described once and a refund keeps to its deadline.
This page is for UK businesses selling online, from a few hundred to tens of thousands of orders a month. The ONS put online retail sales values in Great Britain 6.8% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier.
Where the time goes
Listings on every channel
One product needs different data on each channel. Amazon publishes each product type's required attributes, per store, as a JSON schema it keeps current. On eBay, fields optional on a draft offer become required when it is published.
Dispatch and seller standards
eBay evaluates sellers on the 20th of each month. Unexpected seller cancellations and unresolved buyer issues count as defects, and a tracked parcel is late if it had no carrier scan within your dispatch time and arrived after the latest estimated date. Below Standard can bring selling limits and higher final value fees.
Returns and refunds
An online buyer can cancel most orders until 14 days after the goods arrive (the last parcel, if split), or up to 12 months longer if you never explained the right. The refund, including standard delivery, is due within 14 days of the goods coming back or, if earlier, proof they were sent.
Fraud checks and chargebacks
Shopify rates card orders as low, medium or high risk from signals such as failed address or CVV checks and several cards tried, and leaves the decision to fulfil with you. At Stripe, a dispute usually allows 7 to 21 days and one submission of evidence; the cardholder's bank decides, and a missed deadline loses it.
The systems you already run
Shopify
We build on the GraphQL Admin API; REST has been legacy since 1 October 2024. Webhooks such as orders/create report changes, but Shopify says not to rely on them alone and to reconcile on a schedule.
WooCommerce and BigCommerce
WooCommerce's REST API covers orders, refunds, products and customers, and sends webhooks. BigCommerce webhooks carry little more than an ID, so the software fetches the order, and they switch off after about 48 hours of failed retries.
Amazon Selling Partner API
The Orders API's current version is 2026-01-01, and v0 is deprecated. Listings are checked against Amazon's product type schemas before they are sent.
eBay APIs
The Inventory API turns a SKU into an offer and then a live listing, which can no longer be edited in Seller Hub. The Post-Order API handles returns, cancellations and cases.
Linnworks and Veeqo
Linnworks syncs stock and routes orders across over 100 marketplaces, and documents an API for orders, returns and listings. Veeqo's REST API covers orders, stock, shipments and returns, at 5 requests a second.
What we would build
One product record, every channel
Each product described once, with identifiers, attributes, safety details and images, then sent to Shopify, Amazon and eBay, each checked against that channel's rules first. Gaps are flagged, such as a missing responsible economic operator for goods going to Northern Ireland.
Returns on the clock
A returns screen for every channel that dates the cancellation window from delivery and the 14-day refund deadline from the goods coming back or, if earlier, proof of sending. Refunds go back by the original payment method, nearest deadline first.
Chargeback evidence packs
For each dispute, the order, delivery scans, customer messages and refund policy gathered into one file per evidence type, with the deadline shown, for your finance lead to check and submit.
Consent and review invitations
Each customer's marketing consent kept with its source and date, which Klaviyo's API records, so a checkout email is used only within the soft opt-in. Review invitations go to every buyer after delivery on a fixed rule, never chosen by sentiment.
Where AI helps
AI should not refuse a refund, block a customer for fraud, write reviews or choose who is asked for one. Under UK GDPR, a significant decision with no meaningful human involvement needs safeguards (Article 22C). The CMA treats bot-written reviews as fake, and inviting only satisfied customers as cherry-picking. A named person decides.
- Drafting titles, descriptions and attributes for each channel from supplier data, with your merchandiser checking each before it is published.
- Reading a customer's message, finding the order and tracking, and drafting a reply that a customer service lead edits or sends.
- Assembling chargeback evidence, with your finance lead deciding what is submitted.
How we would start
We would start with the orders that miss dispatch: map how an order travels from your store and marketplaces through the hub to the courier, and connect the hub's API read-only. The first version lists each morning's orders at risk (unpaid, flagged for fraud, short of stock or not yet scanned) with a reason and an owner, for your operations lead to clear.
That first stage, the design and a written scope, typically takes one to three weeks. Like every stage, its price is fixed and agreed before it starts, and you can stop after it. How a project runs
Rules we build around
The software keeps the records these ask for. The duties stay with you.
Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, regulations 30, 31 and 34
The cancellation period ends 14 days after the goods, or the last of them, reach the consumer, or up to 12 months later if the right was not explained. Unless you offered to collect them, the refund, with the cheapest standard delivery, is due within 14 days of the goods coming back or, if earlier, evidence of sending, by the same means of payment.
Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, Schedule 20, and the CMA's price guidance
Since 6 April 2025, fake reviews, hidden incentivised reviews and publishing positive reviews while holding back negative ones are banned. The total price must include unavoidable charges; where buyers choose delivery, the total includes the cheapest option until they pick another. Fines can reach 10% of turnover or £300,000, whichever is greater.
Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, regulation 22
Marketing email to individuals needs consent, or the soft opt-in: details taken during a sale or sale negotiations, marketing only your similar products, and a simple, free way to refuse both when the details were collected and in every message after.
EU General Product Safety Regulation 2023/988, and the EU import scheme
Since 13 December 2024, consumer products placed on the Northern Ireland market need a responsible economic operator established in Northern Ireland or the EU, with its details on the product, packaging, parcel or an accompanying document. Parcels to EU consumers worth up to €150 can use the EU's import scheme (IOSS), with a monthly return.
Questions
Will you replace Shopify or our order hub?
Usually not. Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Amazon, eBay, Linnworks and Veeqo all document APIs, and we build on those. Where your hub already syncs stock and routes orders well, we keep it and build only what it lacks.
Should we buy an ecommerce AI tool instead?
Often, yes. Shopify's Sidekick writes product descriptions and presents changes for review before applying them. Amazon drafts titles, bullet points and descriptions from a few words. eDesk offers an AI Agent and Smart Reply across Amazon, eBay and Shopify messages. We build when the work crosses several systems.
Will customers buy through AI chats?
Through Shopify, buyers in the US and a few other countries can, not yet UK buyers. Its agentic storefronts, active by default for eligible stores, show products in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, some with checkout inside the chat. They read Shopify Catalog or Google Merchant Center, so the AI sees your product data.
Do you do ecommerce app development?
Yes, mostly the work behind the store: an app for your Shopify store, or a web app your team uses for listings, exceptions and returns. We host and look after what we build; you own the code and the data.
